Heavy Metal Musician. An only child, he was born Ronald James Padavona in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to an Italian family. He started his musical career in New York in 1957, playing in various bands, first on bass, then switching to lead vocals. He took the name of Ronnie James Dio professionally in 1961. Dio joined the group "Rainbow" and they released their first album in 1975. Dio left "Rainbow" and joined "Black Sabbath" in 1979, replacing Ozzy Osbourne. He formed his own band, "Dio," in 1982. In January 2007, Dio was inducted into the Rock Walk of Fame on Sunset Boulevard.
