James Cobean McGrew was born in Harrison County, Ohio. He was the second child of Alexander McGrew and Elizabeth Cobean. James was given his mother's maiden name Cobean for his middle name. By 1840 he moved with his family to Frederickstown, Knox County, Ohio, where he met and married Sarah Jane Durbin on October 14,1858 in Frederickstown. There were three children born to them in Frederickstown, Albina, John, and William. In the spring of 1865 James and Sarah and their three children began their migration west following Sarah's brother Joshua and his family. Their first move was to Johnson County, Iowa. Then in 1870 Joshua went to Mills County Iowa and purchased land. Joshua's family then moved to Mills County, Iowa. James and Sarah followed them to Mills county in 1876. James and Sarah lived the remainder of their lives in Mills County and they are buried in the Emerson Cemetery.
James McGrew was a Corporal in Co. H 142 Ohio National Guard 100-Day Regiment, having served to guard Grant's supply lines through the Wilderness to the front at Cold Harbor. Military information provided by Archie Lintz.
