Civil War Veteran; served as a Private in Company K and N of Baxter's Philadelphia Fire Zouaves, the 72nd PA Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged after receiving a gunshot wound through his chin and right shoulder at the Battle of Fredericksburg. He later re-enlisted in the 36th Company, 2nd Battalion of Hancock's Veteran Reserve Corps with the rank of First Sergeant.
