Robert was the son of Erastus F Bruner (1851 – 1923) and Emaline or Emmaline "Emily" Goforth. Little is known about Emily but available information indicates that she was born about 1864 and married Erastus in the late 1880s or early 1890s. A single source provided a date of death about 1910.

Robert was first married to Delia O. Hurt (Apr 23, 1904 - June 14, 1937) whom he married on Jan 31, 1922. Robert and Delia had the following children:

Armster was married to Leanna Osborne (? - Mar 8, 1975) who is also buried in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Robert also had two sisters named Corrine Bruner Jacobs (? - ?) of Sharonville, OH and Patricia Bruner Turner (? - ?) of Danville, KY.
