John Lee was a Revolutionary Soldier (Pvt) in Lt. John Smith's Company, 3rd Regiment, Maryland Militia, commanded by Col. Mordacai Gist. He enlisted May 15, 1778 which shows that he received one hundred bounty. His name is borne on a return, dated March 16, 1779, of enlisted men. John served in battles in South Carolina and North Carolina at Monk's Corner, Guilford Court House and Eutaw Springs. After his discharge at Philadelphia, he returned to Harford County, Maryland, the place of his nativity and married Martha Howlett. The result of this marriage was seven children, five sons and two daughters. He was killed August 30, 1803 at Peach Bottom, York Co., PA. by the accidental discharge of another person. His widow was pensioned by the Government and attained the age of ninety-three. Prior to John's marriage to Martha and after the Revolution, he helped survey and improve parts of the then called, County of Kentucky, State of Virginia, finally settling on Pottinger's Creek.
