Mel Allard, 72, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a Norfolk native, born April 2, 1938, to the late Robert Roland and Mabel Gallup Ward.
Mel was known as a young woman for developing her skill at golf, and won several women's amateur golf tournaments at the Country Club of Maryland. After returning to Virginia in her late thirties, she went on to develop a career in real estate, working initially in 1977 with Cameron Munden, and then with William E. Wood and Associates beginning in 1982, where she had a distinguished career both in sales and in property management for a total of 26 years.
Mel was a "Pink Lady" volunteer at Virginia Beach General Hospital for six years. Mel had a passion for gardening, and many of her beloved friends contributed to the large collection of "frog" mementos she developed over the years.
Mel will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Tammy Scott and Stacye Mehard. She was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Robert B. Ward. She was also predeceased by her former husband, Neal C. Allard, and is survived by two stepdaughters, Christine Allard-Layton and Kathy Wyatt of Delaware. Also surviving Mel are her great-uncle and -aunt, Russell Ward and his wife Elizabeth of Norfolk; her beloved sister-in-law, Evelyn Ward of Ooltewah, Tenn.; three nephews; and 10 first cousins. The daughters of Mel Allard are particularly appreciative of the fine group of nurses and the doctors who cared for their mother in her final hours. You made it possible for us to assist our mother in her final hours and we thank you. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15, at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach.
