Hays -- Alvin A. "Al" Berens, 81, died July 6, 2003, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born Jan. 31, 1922, at Walker, the son of William H. and Amelia Vonfeldt Berens.

A resident of Hays since 1957, he worked for Halliburton for 33 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II as a tank driver with the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. He belonged to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fraternal Order of Eagles, St. Joseph 3rd degree Knights of Columbus and 4th degree Bishop Cunningham Assembly, all of Hays.

On Nov. 15, 1944, he married Ludmilla R. "Millie" Schulte, at Fort Sill, Okla. She survives.

Additional survivors include: a son, Keith, Pensecola, Florida; two daughters, Karen Key, Hays, and Kay Michellich, Wakeneey; two brothers, Ralph, Hays, and Pete, Victoria; a sister, Caroline Schmidt, Salina; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ignatz, Herman, Bill, and Eugene; a sister, Sister Angela Berens; and two infant sisters.

An Eagles memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m., vigil service will be at 7 p.m., a Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th degree rosary will be at 7:30 p.m., and a St. Fidelis Daughters of Isabella rosary at 8 p.m., all on Wednesday. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday both at Cline's Mortuary, Hays. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Walker, with Military Honors by the Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Memorials may be sent to St. Ann's Cemetery Fund or for Masses, in care of the mortuary.
