George Butler, 98, passed away at Terre Haute Regional Hospital on June 8, 2010. He was born in Parke County to George Washington Butler and Henrietta Thomas Butler.
He was a farmer and coal miner. He was the manager of the City Coal Yard for 43 years at the time of his retirement. At the age of 34, he joined the Marines. His lifetime honor was to have been in the Marine Corp Honor Guard at the funeral service of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Bonnie Mae Daniels Butler, on October 15, 1984; a son Dale Butler; a brother John Franklin Butler; and special friend Marion Murphy; five sisters Frances Butler, Opal Smith, Bay Elliot, May Trump and Mary Emrich.
Nobe was survived by a daughter, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and extended family. [Names not included in order to preserve the privacy of survivors.]
