Obituary
Elizabeth Bryson Mullan was born at Washington, Pennsylvania, March 21, 1821. She was married at the home of her nativity to James Mounts, January 20,1842. To this union were born twelve children, six daughters and six sons, all of whom are living, the eldest having reached the 61st year of her age last December and the youngest now 38. They are Mrs. Elizabeth McCollum, of Van Wert, Ohio; Mrs Martha Parker, of Washington, Pennsylvania; Mrs. Ellen Jenkins, of Fate Texas; Mrs. Nancy Ballard, of Jackson, Minnesota; Mrs. Mary Robison and Miss Maggie Mounts of this place; James Jr. of Pike County, Indiana; Francis of Wilson Creek, Washington; Richard, Henry and Thomas of this place and Archibald, a guard at the Reformatory at Jeffersonville. Deceased became a member of the Presbyterian Church at the age of 17, and for more than 65 years she was a faithful and consistent member of that religious denomination. She was 3 years old when General Marquis De La Fayette made his last visit to America in 1824 and remembered distinctly of someone picking her up and holding her above the crowd so she could see the General as he was conveyed through the streets of Washington, Pennsylvania. She began attending Sunday School in 1827, and all the rest of her life she was an earnest advocate of the Sabbath School cause. For more than 10 years she had a class of boys at the Baptist Sunday school, the writer being one of them. James Mounts Sr. and wife came to this town in March, 1865, purchased a farm of Jacob Rayhill and remained on the same until their deaths. Mr. Mounts died January 22, 1892, just 50 years and 2 days from their wedding day. After a short sickness of pneumonia, Mrs. Mounts died at noon, Saturday, February 20, 1904. Her pastor, Rev. W. D. Malcolm, of Scottsburg, preached a funeral discourse from the words "Ehen thou passeth through the waters I will sustain thee" Sunday afternoon, at the Beech Grove Presbyterian Church, after which her remains were laid to rest by the side of her husband in Beech Grove Cemetery.
