Rt. Rev. Michael Alphonsus Irwin was the son of Cecelia Hasty (1839-1923) and Cornelius Irwin (1840-1889), who were married in Norfolk, Virginia, April 3, 1864.

Rt. Rev. Michael Alphonsus Irwin was ordained Priest on June 10, 1900, and Domestic Prelate June 4, 1940.

Monsignor Michael A. Irwin, pastor of St. Mark's Catholic Church (now Our Lady of Guadalupe) at Newton Grove, NC from 1904 to 1928, proudly wrote the story of Dr. John Carr Monk for the readers of the Columbian magazine in June 1926, entitling his article, "A Thousand Catholics From One Man's Faith." He was transferred to New Bern in 1928.

Court Monsignor Michael A. Irwin #1704, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, New Bern, North Carolina, was named in his memory.

FATHER MICHAEL IRWIN COUNCIL NUMBER 9001, Knights of Columbus, Dunn, NC, was named in his memory.

Father Michael Irwin Council received its charter on June 4, 1985. It spun off council 7259 in Newton Grove, North Carolina. The charter Grand Knight of Father Michael Irwin's Council was William A. Glover, Jr. The council has always met at the Education Building of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dunn, NC. This council has participated in the L. A. M. B. project since 1995.
