Pte McKay was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated during a night foot patrol near the village of Nakhonay, in the Panjwai district, approximately 15 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City. He was scheduled to return home in two days.
Aged 24, he was originally from Richmond Hill, Ontario and graduated from high school in Barrie, ON. He was a carpenter before joining the military and deployed on his first tour of duty in October 2009. Known as "Mickey" to his platoon mates and friends, he was remembered as a generous man with a quick wit and great sense of humour. A commanding officer described him as a tough, courageous infantryman. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved fishing and camping.
Pte McKay is survived by his parents Frederick and Elizabeth, brother Riley, other relatives and friends.
Military Funeral was held at the Barrie Armoury, Barrie, Ontario on May 21, 2010. Private family interment service at National Military Cemetery at a later date.

Canada has lost 144 service personnel since the Afghanistan mission began in 2002. One diplomat, a journalist and two aid workers have also died.
