DIES AT AGE OF 91 YEARS
John H. Schaefer, Photographer and Bank Director, Passes Away
John H. Schaefer, 91 years old, proprietor of a photographic business at 887 West Baltimore street for 40 years and a former director of the Central Savings Bank of Baltimore, died yesterday from the infirmities of age at the home of his son, J. William Schaefer, 2400 Callow avenue. Coming to America before the Civil War, Mr. Schaefer founded the photographic business in 1861. He retired in 1900. Mr. Schaefer was named a director in the Central Savings Bank of Baltimore when that institution was founded and continued in that position until he was stricken with paralysis four years ago.
Mr. Schaefer is survived by five sons, the Rev. Henry Schaefer, of Providence, R.I. and J. William Schaefer, Dr. Otto Schaefer, Dr. Theodore A. Schaefer and Dr. Charles A. Schaefer, of this city; four daughters, Mrs. J. Frederick Herbert and Mrs. William C. Starr, of Philadelphia; Mrs. Anna L. Spieker, of Allentown, Pa., and Mrs. Othello Schroedel, of this city; 35 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. tomorrow at the home of his son, J. William Schaefer, 2400 Callow avenue, and at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

NOTE: Schaefer was born in Hesse Darmstadt, and came to America in the mid 1850s. Accordng to Ross Kelbaugh's "Directory of Maryland Photographers 1839-1900," Schaefer's "Gallery of Artistic Photography" was located at a series addresses in Baltimore: 671 W. Baltimore Street, 643 W. Batimore, and 887 W. Baltimore. John William Schaefer took over the business after his father's retirement.
