Charlene Joy Johnston passed away Thursday, April 22, 2010 with her loving children by her side in Jackson at the age of 74 years. She was born June 6, 1935 to Gordon and Floy (Hayes) Ross in Berkeley, California. Charlene attended Albany High and graduated from San Lorenzo High 1953. She met the love of her life Paul Johnston at a school fair when she was 16. The two were married April 6, 1952 in San Lorenzo, CA. They moved around a bit, but finally settled in Fremont where they would raise their five children. Charlene started her working career working as a food service provider for the Fremont Unified School District. She then moved on to work at Park Central and Crestwood Convalescent Hospitals as a Nurse's Aid and would retire 25 years later as the Activities Director from Crestwood (currently Windsor Country Drive Care Center).

Paul and Charlene had a trailer at Lake Camanche in Amador County for several years, where they enjoyed camping and fishing. In 1993, after retirement, they decided to build a home in Ione and make it their permanent residence. They loved traveling especially cruising to Alaska, Hawaii and Panama. In 1997 Paul passed away and Charlene decided to move to Rollingwood in Jackson. She loved living there; she had great neighbors and looked forward to their Bunco games and get togethers. She was a member of the Sierra Belles, Native Daughters of the Golden West and volunteered at the Hospice Thrift Store. She loved spending time with her family and when she wasn't busy at a function she could often be found at her favorite slot machine in Tahoe or the Jackson Rancheria.

Charlene is survived by her children, Guy Johnston and Lora Johnston both of Fremont, Leslie Burrows and husband James of San Ramon, Cherie Johnston Waldear and husband William of Pine Grove, Scott Johnston and wife Christina of Pioneer; sister, Betsy Sievers of Ithaca, NY; 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded by her husband of 45 years, Paul in 1997.

Friends are invited to attend a visitation, Thursday, April 29, 2010, 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Daneri Mortuary, 415 Broadway, Jackson, CA 95642 and a graveside service Friday, April 30, 11:00 A.M. at the Garden of Golden Memories, Sunset View Cemetery, 10200 Hwy 88, in Jackson. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Suite 115, Sacramento, CA 95815. Condolences may be offered via e-mail to the family at [email protected]
