Civil War Confederate Army Officer, Tennessee Governor. He was reared in Winchester and earned his law degree in Nashville. After the outbreak of the Civil War he raised the 1st Tennessee (CSA) Infantry Regiment in 1861, and became its Colonel and commander. Under his leadership the 1st Tennessee fought at the Battles of 1st Manassas, the Seven Days, 2nd Manassas, Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg and Fredericksburg, where he was severely wounded. After the war he was elected to the Tennessee Supreme Court. In 1893 he left the bench to serve as Governor of Tennesse, serving from 1893 to 1897. Upon his retirement he returned to Winchester.
