Naomi Cannaday Sharpe

March 13, 1906 -- Feb. 12, 2008

Naomi Cannady Sharpe, 101, died Tuesday. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Elm City United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in her memory may be directed to Elm City United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 307, Elm City, NC 27822, for missions or to help those in need in the community.

Arrangements are by Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway.

Naomi Cannaday Sharpe lived with her family and those she loved for more than a century. On March 13 she was to have celebrated her 102nd birthday, but, on Feb. 12, 2008, having completed her mission on Earth, Naomi began her life eternal.

She was born on a cattle farm in Floyd County, Va., in 1906, while Teddy Roosevelt was still president. Naomi was the ninth child born to Amos Lee Cannaday and Della Louvenia Hall Cannaday. Her father, Amos, was a farmer, postmaster and a member of the Virginia Legislature. She graduated Pulaski High School and enrolled in Radford College to prepare herself to teach elementary education. After teaching for one year in Pulaski, Va., Naomi accepted a position teaching first grade in Elm City, where she met and married William Gray Sharpe III, a local banker, farmer and lawyer. They were married on May 28, 1930.

Naomi was actively involved in the Elm City community, faithfully teaching Sunday school in her church, Elm City Methodist, and participating in the Elm City Woman's Club, where she served a term as president. Many of the grateful students she taught at Elm City Elementary School still live in the Wilson area. A joyful person herself, she once created a "Joy Seekers Club" for the neighborhood children.

Naomi had a love affair with life until the very day she died. Naomi enjoyed crocheting, sewing and making toys and clothes for the children in her family. She had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening, especially flowers. She cherished her extensive doll collection. Later in life, she continued to learn, frequenting Elderhostels and taking a variety of courses. Naomi appreciated beauty and expressed her unique creativity with her extraordinary handwriting and in her oil paintings. In her eighties, she won several blue ribbons in the Silver Arts Division of the North Carolina Senior Games. She was also an avid reader even after age 100. Naomi also read her devotions and had recent conversations about her faith in Jesus Christ and the spiritual life that lay ahead.

Naomi was young at heart. To celebrate her 101st birthday, her family drove Naomi to the coast where they transported her to the beach in a special wheelchair. She was surrounded, supported and loved there and throughout her life by her entire family.
