Emmett "Lewis" Hales, 86, of Amarillo died Wednesday, May 5, 2010.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Christian Church Chapel with the Rev. Barry Loving officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St.
Lewis was born Sept. 20, 1923, in Randall County to Maiebelle and Henry Hales. He served in the Merchant Marines from 1944 to 1945, carrying supplies back and forth in the Atlantic on the ship "New Zealand Victory." He was a member of Coulter Road Baptist Church. He loved woodworking, flying airplanes and traveling in his RV. He was a retired farmer and married his wife, Faye, in 1998.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; two sisters; and his wife, Rose, who died in 1998.
Survivors include his wife, Faye; three sons, David Hales and wife Paula of Amarillo, Doug Hales of Temple and Scott Hales and wife Julie of Frisco; two stepsons, Wayne Pitt of Amarillo and Greg Pitt of Azle; two daughters, Ginger Bowen and husband James of Phoenix and Angie Roberts and husband Andrew of Longmont, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Connie Morris and husband Gary of Amarillo; a brother, Richmond Hales and wife Mary Jo of Canyon; two sisters, Jane Daniels of Amarillo and Ruby Henderson and husband Sam of Surprise, Ariz.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, TX, 79174-0001.
