Granville S. Arnold was the son of Job Arnold and Lavina W. Thornton (1807, NY). He enlisted as a private at San Francisco, California, August 14, 1861, and was mustered into Company E, 1st California Cavalry, at the Presidio of San Francisco August 15. Private Arnold accompanied the California Column across the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts to drive the Confederates from New Mexico Territory. He arrived at Tucson in May 1862 and at Mesilla in July. Private Arnold was mustered out at Las Cruces August 31, 1864. He re-enlisted for one year as a veteran volunteer at Las Cruces January 19, 1865, and was mustered into Company G, 1st California Veteran Infantry, February 15. Private Arnold was mustered out at Fort Selden, New Mexico Territory, February 12, 1866 (Orton, pp. 124, 413). After the war Granville married Theresa Thompson (1835, CT) about 1868 and settled in Iowa, where their four children were born. Granville filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension in Iowa October 18, 1878, and received application No. 262,056 and certificate No. 694,084. By 1880 he was living with his family at Deadwood, Dakota Territory (1880 US Census). He eventually settled at Seattle, Washington, where he was a member of Stevens Post, No. 1, Grand Army of the Republic.

FUNERALS
ARNOLD - The funeral of Comrade G. S. Arnold will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Butterworth's chapel under the auspices of Stevens Post, No. 1, G. A. R. All comrades and the friends of the deceased are requested to attend and assist in paying the last tribute of respect to the old soldier.
