Abner moved to what is now known as Lakewood Heights of Atlanta in Fulton County, Georgia, where he died in 1828 at age 48, and was buried on his large farm (DeKalb County).
In May of 1937, 104 years later, his remains were moved to make way for I-75 and placed beside his wife, the former Mary Scales (b. 1787, Culpeper, VA, d. 29Jul1872, Ben Hill, GA), in the Mt. Gilead Methodist Church cemetery on Fairburn Road, Atlanta.
