Although She Had Been Ill for Several Weeks Her Death was Unexpected.
It was a great shock to the citizens of Monticello and Jasper County last Friday night when the announcement was made that Mrs. George T. Powers, Sr., was dead.
Mrs. Powers had been sick for several weeks, but was thought to be improving. She was able to be up a day or so before her death and was in her usual jovial mood when suddenly she became desperately ill, and died about eight twenty-five o’clock Friday night.
Mr. and Mrs. Powers and children moved to Jasper County about thirty years ago and located near Talmadge Tabernacle, two miles north of Monticello, where they resided until a few years ago, when they moved to Monticello.
From the first Mrs. Powers took an active part in the affairs of the Methodist church at Talmadge and was one of its more lovable and constant members.
She was a graduate of Wesleyan Female College, Macon, and possessed a brilliant mind and admirable disposition. Through these attainments she gathers around her a wide circle of friends.
In the home her life shoe with all the luster of a precious jewel. To her husband she was a faithful and devoted companion. Her children reveled in her gentle and overshadowing care. To them she was more like ??istin than a mother. Her friends and neighbors found her always that beautiful courtesy that is rare and priceless. In her passing the town and county have lost a woman whose sojourn here was lofty and full of good deeds. She was sixty-four years of age.
The funeral services were held at the family residence Saturday afternoon at three o’clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. R. Mackay, of the Monticello Methodist church, who was assisted by Rev. James Bradley, pastor of the Monticello Presbyterian church. The interment was made in West View Cemetery.
Mrs. Powers is survived by her husband and five children, Mrs. L. P. Brightwell and Mr. J. B. Powers of Monticello; Mr. C W. Powers of Woodbury, Ga.; Mrs. George T. Powers, Jr., of Sandersville, Ga.; Mrs. Howard Underwood of Milledgeville, Ga.; and two sisters, Mrs. D. M. Durrette and Mrs. Ida H. Humphries of Macon; also eight grand-children.
