Mathew was born in York County, PA, in 1836 he and his family traveled west and ended up in New Lisbon, Ohio. He served as a PVT during the Civil War (Co K, 143 Regt OVI (Ohio Vol Infantry) GAR 1864. He married Melissa McLaughlin and had nine children. He worked all his life as a labor and farm hand. His death in 1906 at the age of 78, was of natural causes (old age).
