Peter Sheffield Hagan came to Montgomery County at an early age, but was born in Bulloch County, July 6, 1863. He was associated with naval stores and in the mercantile business in Vidalia, and in 1910 began his political career when he was elected clerk of the court of Toombs County, which had been formed from Montgomery County. In 1911 he was elected clerk of the Superior Court and four years later was elected Ordinary or County Judge, which position he held until his death. His office administered probate court, from the custom of the old English laws, with protecrion amd justice for all. he served during two world wars and the depression period, devoting thirty-two years of his life to public service in his community, and his memory is held in reverence by all who knew him. Mrs. Hussey's mother was born in Conway, South Carolina, and was deceased on September 22, 1904. An ancestor of Mrs. Mary Preddy (Holmes) Hussey's, William Cone, was a captain in the Revolutionary War, and received land grants in Georgia for his services.
