Conrad George Schmid was born in 1875 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Vitus Schmid and Sarah Chase Schmid. He and his brother Victor moved to Seattle with their parents in 1878 and were early settlers of both Seattle and Mercer Island. Conrad and Victor attended the University of Washington and were excellent athletes. In June of 1898 both died in the sinking of the Schooner Jane Gray off Cape Flattery. Their sister Theresa Schmid McMahon also attended the UW and became a lifelong Professor at the University. Their youngest sister Caroline died in Phoenix, Arizona. Their widower father remarried and had another son, George Mercer Schmid. George Mercer died in 1899 at the age of 6.
