Rainstorm Plane Crash Kills Two Area Couples
A single engine airplane crashed in a farm field Sunday about nine miles south of Maryville, Mo., and one-half mile east of U.S. Highway 71, killing a prominent Russell couple and a Sharon Springs couple, formerly of Russell.
The victims were identified by highway patrolmen as the pilot, Samuel A. Klema, 41, and his wife, Louise, 40, 109 Ober St., Russell and Marvin L. Brack, 43, and wife, Thelma, 36, of Sharon Springs.
Funeral services for the four are pending at Deines Brothers Funeral Home, Russell. Services for the Bracks will be in Otis.
Klema operated supermarkets in Russell, Sharon Springs and Bellville. Brack, who resided in Russell until about 4 years ago, managed Klema's store at Sharon Springs store.
The plane was on a flight from Russell to Chicago. The sky was overcast at the time.
It plunged into the field about 11 miles south of Marysville. Hitting nose first, it hit a tree and skidded about 30 feet into grass.
Several residents in the area reported hearing a plane circle several times. One witness said the engine sounded as if it were sputtering.
Word of the crash came from two farmers who heard it. They are Edgar Jackson and Ted Lister.
That was shortly after 9 a.m. CST. Joe Rankin, operator of the Marysville Airport, spotted the wreckage from the air. State Highway patrolmen, Nodaway county authorities and farmers joined the search.
A jeep and a tractor were used to get through muddy fields. The dead were found strapped in their seats.
Farmers in the area, one mile south of Pumpkin Center and two miles west of the 102 River, told authorities the pilot seemed lost during the rain.
