US Senator. Born in Kansas, he graduated as a civil engineer from the University of Nevada in 1917. He enlisted in the United States Army during World War I, rising from private to 1st Lieutenant, and serving as an intelligence officer. Honorably discharged in 1919, he worked as a civil engineer in Nevada, serving as the state's Chief Engineer from 1927 to 1935. During World War II he worked as a civilian consultant to the United States Senate Military Affairs subcommittee, dealing with material and base facility examinations. He had unsuccessfully ran for the United States Senate in 1944, but ran again in 1946, this time being elected as a Republican from Nevada to the United States Senate. He served two terms from 1947 to 1959, and was defeated by Howard W. Cannon in his attempt for a third term. After leaving the Senate he remained in Washington, DC as a civil engineer consultant, and died there in May 1961.
