Rev. John McAdams exact date of birth is unclear but research indicates that he was born in 1779 in Ireland and that his family emigrated to the United States in 1783 when he was four years old. He married Martha Rogers in 1802. Records show that he lived in South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and was in Texas by 1834 where he moved in order to preach the gospel.

Rev. John McAdams and Martha's children were: James, Elizabeth, Mary, Joseph, Nancy,John Jr., Martha,William, Jane, George and Drucilla.

Kelly Edgar McAdams and his wife Ina May Ogletree McAdams erected a headstone in McAdams Cemetery for John McAdams, Sr. and his wife Martha. According to "The McAdams Family of Walker County, Texas" Rev. McAdams remains were "moved from the old field on Louise Ward Ranch."
