Gary Grant Adams, 71, longtime resident of Florence, died Jan. 13, 2008, at the Carriage House in Snowflake.

Mr. Adams was born Jan. 18, 1936, in Mesa to Grant T. and Sylvia M. Jones Adams, the oldest of four children.

He attended schools in Mesa and moved to Coolidge his senior year, graduating in 1954. He earned a bachelor's degree in education from Arizona State University in 1963 and a master's degree in education from Northern Arizona University in 1970. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Australia and served in the National Guard. In 1960 he married Mary Lynn Elgan in the Mesa Arizona Temple.

Growing up he worked on the family farm and later worked in construction. Then for 23 years he taught industrial arts and Arizona history at Florence High School. As a caring teacher, he touched the lives of hundreds of individuals. He longed to be back on a farm driving tractors during the summer months. He enjoyed reading, working with wood, gardening (his tomatoes were famous), telling jokes and mostly being with his family. He was a generous man.

He was a faithful member of the LDS Church. He found a deep feeling of satisfaction serving others. He served as president of the Florence and Gila River branches. High Priest group leader, high counselor and worked at the church cannery in Mesa. He spent many years lifting prisoners' spirits by holding church meetings at Arizona State Prison. His favorite calling was caring for and visiting families as their home teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lynn Elgan Adams of Nampa, Idaho; five children, Kumen Adams (Nancy) of Thoreau, N.M., Jennifer Shipton (Scott) of Rigby, Idaho, Lynnette Beatty (Paul) of Snowflake, Elizabeth Davis (Shaun) of Clay Springs and Nathaniel "Sam" Adams (Cari) of Nampa; brother David Adams of Mesa; two sisters, Betty Thomasson of Chandler and Connie Judd, currently serving a mission in San Francisco; and 29 grandchildren.

Silver Creek Mortuary of Taylor handled arrangements.
