Steve was the son of Thomas Edgar Hurt, Sr. (5 Feb 1882-15 Jun 1944), and Nancy Susan Jane (Sisney) Henson Hurt Sorden (20 Sep 1903-12 Jul 1969). He was the husband of Mary Alice (Morgan) Hurt (21 Jun 1932), and married her on July 10, 1952, in Sikeston, MO. They had two Sons: Richard Dane Hurt (19 Jun 1953) and Mark Albert Hurt (29 Jan 1956).
Steve enlisted in the Navy in 1950, after graduation from East Prairie High School in East Prairie, MO. He trained at Great Lakes Naval Training Center just north of Chicago, then served a tour of duty in Kodiak Alaska.
He was discharged from the Navy in 1954 and returned to East Prairie briefly before moving to Huntsville, TX, where he attended Sam Houston Teacher's College until around 1957. He died in an automobile accident in Texas on 23 Apr 1957.
Steve's remains are in Dogwood Cemetery, just northwest of East Prairie, MO.
