TURTLE LAKE -- Funeral services for John Schock, Sr., were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Trinity Lutheran church in Turtle Lake, the Rev. Clyde M. Carleton officiating. Interment was made in the Turtle Lake Cemetery.
Mr. Schock, 84, died in the Turtle Lake hospital Thursday. He had been ill two weeks and in the hospital since Monday.
A resident of [rural Turtle Lake and] the Turtle Lake community since 1910, he was a member of the Trinity Lutheran church. [He began farming by breaking the sod of a prior homestead northeast of Turtle Lake.]
Born Dec. 1, 1877, in [Borodino, Bessarabia of] South Russia, he attended schools there and was married there to Christina [Christiana] Ehni on Feb 16, 1906. They came to the United States in 1910, [...] he farmed until retiring in 1942 [1943] when they moved to Turtle Lake. His wife died in 1957.
He leaves six sons: Jacob, Alex, John Jr., and Reinhold, all of Turtle Lake, and Dan [of] El Monte, Calif., and Emil [of] Verendrye [N.D.]; two daughters, Mrs. Jake (Helen) Fueller, Turtle Lake, and Mrs. George (Emma) Whitaker, San Gabriel, Calif.; six brothers, Gottfried, Mandan [N.D.], Emanuel, Lodi, Calif., Fred, Murhardt, Germany, Reinhold, Ludwigsburg, Germany, and Jacob Jr. and Daniel, both missing [having been executed by the Russian military] since World War II; one sister, Mrs. Magdalena Fickel, Ludwigsburg, Germany; [and] 34 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son [Gustav] who died in infancy.
Honorary pallbearers were John Ruck, Knute Sondrol, Julius Grosz, I. [Israel] Schilling, Jacob Hofer, John Miller, Christ Wagner and John Reiser.
Active pallbearers were his grandsons Loren, Meinhardt, Raymond, Martin R [all] Schock, [and] Wilbert and Marvin Fueller.
