Clarence was married to Mary Gowin on 6 Aug., 1900 at Windom, MN. They farmed near Comfrey, MN. until they came to the town of Underwood on Oct. 16, 1906 bringing their livestock and household goods with them. They lived with Mrs. Herring's brother, Grant Gowin, who was homesteaded south of Turtle Lake in 1902 until they bought a relinquishment from Pete Hohman about 5 miles east of Turtle Lake and built a house in the spring of 1907. They lived there for three years and then sold it to John Braun who lived just north of them. They then bought the Jake Gergen homestead about seven miles west of Turtle Lake and after living there for three years the crops were so poor it was impossible to stay there any longer and they let it go back to the Tom Casey Land Co. In the spring of 1913, they moved into Turtle Lake. They rented a house from Johnnie Reuter and lived there one year before buying four lots from A.F. Haas in the Wings First Additions, lots No. 17,18,19,20. A house was built on these lots and in 1923 was destroyed by fire. He retired from active farming in 1949 and rented his land to his sons. Mr. and Mrs. Herring had six children. Leslie, Carol, George, Allie, LeRoy and Adolph. Adolph was the last living child ot the Herrings. On April 1, 1952, Clarence suffered a stroke and passed away on April 27, 1952.
