James W. Hicks Sr., 89, of Joseph and formerly of La Grande, died May 10 at a care center in Enterprise. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Elgin Cemetery. A potluck will follow at 1 p.m. at the Rock Creek Grange. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.

Jim was born Sept. 20, 1920, to Alfred and Sylvie (Owen) Hicks in Mansfield, Wash. He married Agnes McCain Nov. 13, 1945, in Cullman, Ala. He then served with the Army-Air Force in the South Pacific. They moved to Oregon after his discharge.

Jim was involved with the Elgin VFW, where he was a life member. He helped to start the post and served in many different positions. After the Elgin post closed he transferred his membership to the Enterprise VFW Post.

Jim was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. He was a farmer, logger, timber worker and also owned a Chevron station for several years in Pendleton.

He is survived by his son, Jim Hicks Jr. of Joseph; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Paulette Hicks of Elgin; daughter and son-in-law, Sylvie and Phil Chrusoskie of Imbler; three grandsons; one granddaughter; five great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and one sister, Neva Myers of Spokane. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes; son, Stephen; and siblings, Johnnie Hicks, Elsie Hicks, Henry Hicks, Harry Hicks, Bennie Hicks, Charlie Hicks, Mamie Kellogg and Mollie Henningsen.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association in care of Daniels-Knopp.
