Enlisted 26 May 1861 at Allegheny County at the age of 22. His occupation was listed as 'Joiner'. Mustered into active service as a resident of Warren Co., Penn, on 28 May 1861, to Co. D; 42nd Infantry Regiment (also known as the 1st Penn. Rifles); Pennsylvania Volunteers. His rank was Sergeant.

In his father's bio, a family historian notes the Sergeant was taken prisoner at Gaines Mills and later exchanged.

Augustus was Killed in Action 14 Sep 1862 at South Mountain, Maryland
