Charles R. Ross was born in Grainger County, Tennessee. His family moved to Alabama around 1817-1818. They moved back to Tennessee around 1829 after his Grandmother Lucy Ross died.

The History of Caldwell and Livingston County Missouri:
Charles R. Ross "Uncle Charley" Ross migrated to Livingston County, Missouri in 1838. From there he moved to Caldwell County where he bought 40 acres of Mormon land near Fairview. By 1885 he owned more than 500 acres in the county. He served 18 months in the Civil War with Company E of the 6th Missouri State Militia. He was discharged for wounds received in The Battle of Lone Jack, Missouri.
"He kept an excellent hotel at Black Oak & was probably better posted in regard to the real estate and history of Caldwell County than any man in it, and the respect shown "Uncle Charley Ross" is extensive".

He bought 40 acres of land that was owned by Jacob Hawn (Haun). This property included the Hawn's (Haun's) Mill which was where the Mormon massacre known as Hawn's (Haun's) Mill Massacre occurred. By 1885, he owned more than 900 acres in the county.
Charles R. "Uncle Charley" Ross served 18 months in the Civil War with Company E of the 6th Missouri State Calvary. He was discharged for a wound to his shin that he received in the Battle of Lone Jack, Jackson County, Missouri. It was reported that after he was wounded at Lone Jack "The brave old man refused any assistance until the fight was over, gamely calling out to his comrades, "Keep up the flag, boys! Let me alone; I'm alright. Keep up the flag".

Charles & Francis divorced in 1868. He married 2nd to Sarah Emiline Clawson-Davis of Campbell County Tennessee, widow of James L. Davis. She was the daughter of Hugh Clawson who came to Caldwell County in 1843.
He filed for a pension on 20 Sep 1864, and Sarah Emeline Clawson Ross filed for her widow's pension on 22 Apr 1898.

He was the son of Maston Ross a veteran of the War of 1812 & Nancy Hodges Ross. & the grandson of Charles Ross a Revolutionary War Veteran & his wife Lucy Ross.

Charles is found with new wife Sarah on the 1870 Missouri census reports, listed is daughter Sarah age 15, with wife Sarah & her 3 children from previous marriage; Nancy Davis born 1857 AR, Rosanna Davis born 1860 AR, Hugh Davis born 1854 Missouri. Charles' mother Nancy age 80 was living with them.
