John Fant, 61, Dies Thursday at Iowa City

Services for John Fant, 61, Williamsburg, were at 10:30 am Monday in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Williamsburg. Fant died of cancer at Mercy Hospital, Iowa city, Thursday, Feb. 17, 1977. The Rev. Marvin E. Ceynar officiated at the service. "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" was an organ-piano duet by Kim and Tammy Haas. Organist Mrs. Brad Furman accompanied the soloist, Merwyn Jones for "How Great Thou Art". The Carl Possehls and Kenneth Folkmanns cared for the flowers Burial was in the Pilot Grove Cemetery, Pilot Township. Honorary casket bearers were Eldon Yearian, John I. Schlesselman, John Dawson, Leo Donovan, Don Janss and Archie Wink. Active casket bearers were Dean Border, Ronald Mohr, Frank Hollopeter, Fritz Kinzenbaw, William McCallister and Roy Fry. A native of Iowa County, Fant was born July 22, 1915 in Pilot Township near Williamsburg, the son of Axel and Minnie Klever Fant. His father who was born in Sweden came to the United States at the age of 13. The deceased received his education in the Pilot Grove rural school. He spent all his life farming in the Williamsburg and Marengo area and was also a salesman for Standard Chemical the past few years. He married Luella Gleason, Sept 14, 1968, and the couple moved into the Williamsburg the fall of 1976. He was a life-time member of the Methodist church and was also a member of the Masonic lodge.

Surviving is his wife, two children, Mrs. Dennis (Marilyn) Petree, Overland Park, Kan.; Robert L. Fant, Davenport; and two step-daughters, Kay Albert, Houston , Tex., and Mrs. Laurel (Phyllis) Haas, Marengo; also grandchildren Jon and Lisa Petree, Robin Weiss and Step-grandchildren , Jim Albert, Kim and Tammy Haas; also five sisters, Mrs. Clark Heitman, Williamsburg; Mrs. Clarence (Carrie) Wandling, Oceanside, Calif.; Mrs. Elmer (Ruth) Imhoff, Center Point, Mrs. Otto (Elvena) Hopp, Conroy and Mrs. Merrit (Dorothy) Plagmann, Norway; two brothers, Carl Fant, Williamsburg and Adolph Fant, Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Mary.
