He was born in Dallas, Ore., December 18, 1865. Fitted for college at Tualatin Academy, graduating in 1874, and was graduated from Pacific University in 1878; studied theology in Oberlin Seminary, graduating in 1882. Ordained by Oregon Association of Congregational Churches, at East Portland, Oregon, April 21, 1890. Acting pastor at White Salmon, Wash., 1882-83; supplied in many places, but not as a regular pastor. His life work was educational, literary and journalistic, and not ministerial. County school superintendent, for Clatsop County, Oregon, for ten years. Published History of Oregon, in four volumes. Editor of Oregon Journal, 1885-89. One of the writers of History of Oregon and its Indian Wars. Was unmarried. Died of obstruction in brain in Portland, Ore., Dec. 22, 1904, aged 49 years, 4 days.
