Mary Palmer was born in McCune, Kansas, the grand daughter of pioneers to Kansas in 1865. She taught her first term of school in a rural school in Oklahoma. In 1916, while teaching primary grades in Salina, Oklahoma she married the Salina school superintendent, Dan Herrington. They continued their life together until her death in 1977. While teaching in Salina she was sent by the Board of Education to Muskogee to appeal to the United States Board of Indian Affairs for funds for the Salina schools. The Salina schools received the funding. Mary Palmer used the Montessori Method of teaching her young students, many of whom were Cherokee children with little usage of the English language. She was very protective and nurturing of these young pupils. After her marriage to Dan Herrington she often taught in the schools where he was superintendent. She laughingly told of an instance where she taught a boys' agriculture class for a short time until a trained agriculture teacher could be hired. In 1922 the Herringtons changed from teaching to the mercantile business in Washington and Mayes Counties in Oklahoma. In 1947 the Herringtons moved to Tahlequah for their daughter, Beth, to attend college. During the remaining years of her life, Mary P. Herrington enjoyed working in her flower gardens, doing needlework, visiting with friends, working in the church and the Rebekah Lodge and traveling with Mr. Herrington. She was District President of Eastern District of the Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association. She and Mr. Herrington celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary shortly before her death.
Mr. Herrington lived ten and one-half years after her death and was cared for by their daughter.
