Visitation: Will begin at 1:00 pm, Sunday afternoon, April 04, 2010 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be at the funeral chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday evening.
Graveside Service: 3:00 p.m., Monday afternoon, April 05, 2010 at Cedar Memorial Township Cemetery with Rev. Tom Pettinga officiating.

Interment: Cedar Memorial Township Cemetery at Fremont, Iowa.

Marvin passed away Thurday evening at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 6 days.

Marvin F. Vander Schaaf, son of Floris and Marie Fynaardt Vander Schaaf, was born August 26, 1930 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was a graduate of the Red School in Mahaska County. Following his education he farmed with his father southeast of Oskaloosa. On January 18, 1952 he was inducted into the United States Army, he served overseas in Korea and was decorated with a Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on December 19, 1953. Upon his return home, he began farming east of Oskaloosa, he was at that location from 1954 to 1958. He then moved to the Fremont area where he farmed to the present time. Marvin was a member of the Cedar Christian Reformed Church, the Farm Bureau, and the American Legion in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed farming and the many motorcycle trips he and Tressa took covering the United States from coast to coast.


Marvin is survived by his daughter Linda Sue and her husband David Thorpe of Glendale, Arizona; his best friend and her entire family, Linda DeJong of Fremont, Iowa; a grandson, Ryan Beadle and his wife Stephanie of Fort Smith Arkansas; a granddaughter Jennifer and her husband Dustin Cowley of Amarillo, Texas; three great grandsons; two great grand daughters; a brother Seymour Vander Schaaf of Urbandale, Iowa; three sisters: Marjorie Van Mersbergen of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Leona and her husband Martin Nunnikhoven of Pella, Iowa, and Cynthia and her husband Junior Langstraat of Monroe, Iowa; and one son-in-law Jan Foarde of Fort Smith Arkansas.


Besides his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his wife Tressa, a daughter Bonnie Foarde, a sister Harriet Nunnikhoven, and an infant sister.


Memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Christian Reformed Church or Crystal Heights Care Center.
