CHARLOTTE (possibly CHARLOTTI) THELMA "Lottie" (NOLAND) SCHUH KEADY KNOOP was born in Sonora, CA in 1910, was perhaps named after her Uncle Charles, but was always called "Lottie" throughout her life. By 1920, Lottie was living in Oakdale, CA with her parents.

On January 19, 1927, while she was only 16 years old, and in the midst of her parents' tumultuous divorce, Lottie married 24-year-old George Henry William Schuh (1902-1953), a teamster. However, the marriage did not last very long. By September of the same year, not quite eight months into the marriage, Lottie had left George. They were subsequently divorced. I do not know if George ever remarried.

[Incidentally, George's mother was Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Hoffman) Wesselhoft Schuh (1869-1947), who was also the mother of Christian Fredrick "Chris" Wesselhoft (1891-1962), the future second husband of Lottie's mother, Mae Beatrix (Head) Noland Wesselhoft (1889-1936)! Thus, George and Chris were half-brothers!]

According to family history, sometime in 1928 or 1929, Lottie moved in with Orval Jay "Blackie" Blackwell (1906-1963), who was a farm laborer and truck driver. They could not get married because Lottie was still married to Schuh at the time, but Lottie and Blackie did have a child in 1930. Lottie named the child, William Leeroy (or LeRoy) "Billy" Noland (1930-1982). The 1930 Federal Census, however, lists both Lottie and Billy as "Blackwell" and not as "Noland!" To confuse matters even further, there are two birth records on file with the county, one showing William Leeroy Noland, and another showing William Leeroy Blackwell! (Although Blackie never married Lottie, he did marry another woman, but always considered Billy to be his son and a half-brother to his other children.)

Sometime before 1938, according to the 1938 Tuolumne County Voter Registration, Lottie married Leslie George Keady (1902-1963) and lived in Sonora. (Leslie was born in the state of Washington and worked as a teamster in a sawmill. When he came to Tuolumne County, Leslie worked as a laborer, most likely in road construction. We do not know if he was ever married before he married Lottie. He was about 37 years old when he married Lottie!)

Sometime around 1944, we believe that Leslie and Lottie were divorced. (By 1950, by the way, Leslie had moved to Los Angeles, where he died in 1963.)

In 1945, Lottie married Albert Henry "Al" Knoop (1890-1983), a diary owner, construction worker, and gold miner. Al's brother, William F. Knoop (1888-1968), was active in local politics, and was the Jamestown District Supervisor essentially from 1928 to 1952. The Knoop family was very well known and respected in the county. However, with Lottie being a divorcée, having an illegitimate child, as well as a criminal record, Al's family was apparently quite disappointed that he married someone of Lottie's character.

In 1952, Charlotte "Lottie" (Noland) Schuh Keady Knoop, age 42, died in a Sonora hospital after a brief illness, possibly cirrhosis of the liver according to a Knoop descendant, and is buried in an unmarked grave at the Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.
