U.S. Congressman. He attended Fruitland Institute, graduated from the law department of the University of South Carolina and served in U.S. Army Officers’ Training School at Camp Johnston, Florida, during World War I. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1919, engaged in agricultural pursuits and was clerk of court and register of deeds for Anderson County, South Carolina (1920-33). In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third, Seventy-fourth, and Seventy-fifth Congresses, serving until 1939. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his agricultural pursuits and was a member of the South Carolina State Senate (1951-54, 59-62).
