Bertha was born near Cedar Bluffs to John and Malinda Achey. She attended Cass No. 1 school. She married Eldo October 8, 1903 and spent their life farming on their farm near Tipton until his death in 1962. To this union were born seven sons. She then moved to Lisbon, and later to Cookson Memorial Home in West Branch. She and Eldo were Grandpa and Grandma to many kids besides their own fourteen grandchildren. They both were very happy people. Some said that when they laughed, they laughed from their toes up and when they cried, they cried from their toes up. When the grandchildren brought school pictures or projects they had made, they were put up on the wall. She was Aunt Bird to many people.
She was a member of the Presbyterian church and a Gold Star Mother. She is survived by four sons; Claude, Tipton; Guy, Decorah; Ray, Lisbon; and Elmer, West Branch. She was preceded in death by her husband, 3 sons (Harold, Homer and Ernest), 3 brothers and 2 sisters. There grandchildren were: Mayson, Roger, Keith, and Bethany of Decorah; Marcia Ann and Muriel Jean of Tipton; Richard and Sandra of Tipton; Rita, Donna, Kathy and Sharon of Lisbon; Don and Beverly of West Branch. And so many Great Grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held at Dye Funeral Home in Tipton. Rev Max Paige officiating. Joe Mallie was vocalist and Mrs. Arnold Swan was organist. Pall bearers were Donald, Mayson, Keith and Richard Mitchell, Donald Bohr, Curtis Bothel. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Cedar Bluffs. She had died at Solon Care Center.
