Michael Alexander Derreberry is the son of Benjamin Derreberry and Susannah Hipp. He was first married to Eliza Jane Grigsby before 1856 and had by her 8 children. He then married Alice Jane Johnson and had 7 more children. During the Civil War he served in Thomas' Legion 69th NC Infantry Regt. Co. I.; also serving in the 69th were his 3 brothers and his uncle.

The "Derreberry" surname was originally DÜRRENBERGER until they arrived in Philadelphia, PA aboard the "Robert and Alice" from Mertzwiller, Alsace in Sep of 1738; they were Swiss/German. The name was soon Americanized and there are many variations of this name: Derreberry, Derryberry, & Terryberry being the most common. The "Derreberry" spelling was very common among the families of Burke & Cherokee Cos., NC.
