Morgan Daniels
On Monday, January 9, the residents of Spring Brook were saddened to learn of the death of Morgan Daniels, a long resident of that community. For years, during the winter seasons, he suffered with asthma. This year it developed into pneumonia.
Morgan Daniels was the son of William and Jane Daniels, of Spring Brook, and was born in 1867 on the old homestead of his father and grandfather. The grandfather was one of the pioneers of that Welsh community; it was he that felled the first tree for the clearing of it as a community. In 1896 he was united in marriage to Annie Richards, also of Spring Brook, and since resided on the Richards farm. To this union was born one son -- William -- who, along with Jennie*, an adopted daughter, a niece of the deceased, and the mother, mourn the death of a dutiful husband and a loving father. Thursday following, in spite of the inclement weather a large number of friends gathered together to pay their last respects to the departed.
The funeral services were in charge of his pastor, the Rev. John T. Griffiths, assisted by the Rev. Peter L. Lloyd, a former pastor. Both ministers paid a glowing tribute to the deceased as one who had always stood ready to stand by the minister, the church and the community.
The pall bearers were Rees W. Price, Al Jones, Henry Jones, Tom R. Matthews, Otis Morgan and Harry Beaver.
Because of the wintry weather only a few from out of town were able to attend. Among those who came were Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Daniels, Scranton; Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Daniels, Hallstead; Rev and Mrs P. L. Lloyd, Prompton; Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Griffith, Scranton; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Beaver, Scranton; and Garfield Jones, Falls.
Morgan Daniels was a man "given to hospitality." There was always a welcome for the stranger and the unfortunate at his home. Under his roof there was an unbounding hospitality. He was a friend, indeed, for he was a friend in need and in deed. "Inasmuch as ye did it to one of these little ones ye did it unto Me." He was an optimist with a big and tender heart, registering itself in a sunny disposition and full of humor. The influence of his life will pervade the community for years to come, and his memory will be kept green by a large circle of friends who can barely realize the fact of Spring Brook without Morgan Daniels. The sympathy of a community goes out to the family bereaved in this trying hour.
