James H Kinser was born in Greene County in Eastern Tennessee on November 18, 1829, the son of George and America (Etter) Kinser. Nine months before his birth, on March 4th of the same year, Andrew Jackson succeeded John Quincy Adams as the 7th President of the United States. James grew up in a large farming family with at least 12 siblings. The census record shows that he spent most of his life in Greene and Cocke Counties in Tennessee.

On February 27, 1855, when James was 25, he married Mary Rinehart in Greene, TN. The marriage was solemnized by his cousin Andrew Cobble. They started a family right away with their first child, America L Caroline Kinser, being born 9 months and two weeks later. Over the next 17 years they would have ten children (America L Caroline, Elenora, Mary D, James W, Cordelia, Eliza, Thomas Kendrick, Isaac Henry, Enoch Calvin, and Naoma).

Six years after they were married the US Civil War began. In 1863 James was 34, 5 feet 5 inches tall, with fair complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. It was then he joined for duty and was enlisted to the Union Army by Colonel Reeve on January 5, 1863 in Greene County, TN for a three year term. He was appointed Captain of Company K, 8 Tennessee Infantry. Two months into his service, on the evening of March 10, 1863, while marching a company of recruits across the Clinch? Mountains, he stepped off of a rock and was "ruptured." This caused his disability which would soon end his military career and interfere with the rest of his life. He was present for the muster-in roll date, August 11, 1863, at Camp Nelson, KY, but was not able for duty much of the time until his discharge. September and October he was "absent with leave" and left October 30, 1863. His resignation was received and he was discharged December 9, 1863, eleven months into his military career.

Captain James H Kinser died on July 7, 1892 at the age of 62. He is buried at St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery in Greene County, 3205 St. James Rd., Greeneville, TN, 33743.
