Mr. Garland E. "Putt" Painter, 79, of 20219 White's Ferry Road, Poolesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, at home, following an extended illness.
He was the husband of Elizabeth Daniel Painter, his wife of 51 years.
Born Oct. 24, 1917, in Poolesville, he was a son of the late Clarence E. and Nellie Golladay Painter.
Mr. Painter was educated at Poolesville schools and served two and a half years in the 1st Armored Division in World War II.
He was a retired mechanic. His hobbies included Civil War history, hunting, guns, leather crafting and gardening.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, G. Edward Painter Jr. and wife Caroline, and William Daniel Painter and wife Jacqueline; one brother, H. Kenneth Painter of Gaithersburg; two sisters, Nell V. Dayhoff of Frederick and Janet L. Bliss of Poolesville; and two granddaughters, Susan and Danielle.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Claire E. Ruble.
There will be no visitation.
Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 20100 Fisher Ave., Poolesville. Interment will be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Peter's Church, P.O. Box 387, Poolesville, Md. 20837, or the National Rehabilitation Hospital, 102 Irving St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20010.
Arrangements are by the Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville.
