Rena Mae was the seventh child born to James T. and Nancy A. Lott. Her siblings were: William Taylor, Louisa A., Charles, Sarah N., Martha Jane, Nancy, Mary, James, Jr., John and Emma. Rena Mae was born and raised in the Cox's Mill area of Barbour County.

On Mar. 3, 1887, Rena Mae married William Robert Butts, also of Cox's Mill. They made their home here on Texasville Road. Coxs Mill is just down the road from Texasville. Rena Mae and Willie were the parents of Mittie, Mary, Lena Mae, Exia, Pearl, Robert Harmon, Minnie Lee, Jennie, Nan, Eunice Jewel and Lucille Butts.

Rena Mae died at Texasville on December 12, 1939 and was buried across the street at the Texasville United Methodist Church aka Adams Chapel Church.
