Virgil Lee Acord, known by family members and many
friends as "Bud", came to Sparks area with his parents,
Marion and Bertha Acord, in 1927, at the age of 13. He
drove a team pulling one of the covered wagons. Soon after
arrival here he enrolled in East View school northwest of
Sparks, completing the eighth grade in 1928. He graduated
from the Sparks High School as valedictorian with the class
of 1932. In the fall he enrolled in the National School of
Typewriting in Oklahoma City. His diploma from this school, dated May 29, 1934, states that he successfully completed the course of study in Shorthand and Typewriting.
A short time later he joined the US Army and was stationed
in Wyoming. While there he bought himself out of the Army
and entered the University of Oklahoma. In 1939, before he completed his degree at the university, he applied for and was hired by the Internal Revenue Service in Washington
D.C. He was later transferred to Chicago where he worked
until reentering the Army in 1942.
During World War II, Virgil served in the Intelligence Service being stationed most of the time in Alaska and Greenland. He was discharged in early 1946 and reenrolled in the University of Oklahoma. After graduating from OU he enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh, Pa, where he earned his Masters Degree in 1948.
Late that spring he returned to the Sparks area where he
made his home for the rest of his life. He started his teaching career in the Sparks school system that fall. His major subjects were Typewriting,Shorthand, and German. He
was a high school teacher, but occasionally taught an upper grade class.
About 1956 he transferred to the Prague school system, where he taught for several years. In the early sixties he changed to Harrah, for two years. His next change was to Carney, where he taught for one or two years.
His last school was Wellston, where he remained until his retirement in 1976. In all he taught in the Lincoln County
schools for 28 years. During his entire teaching career he lived in or near Sparks, always commuting to his teaching positions.
In 1949, Virgil bought the Harold Neer farm one mile west of Sparks. He lived there until his death 2 March, 1985. His death was the result of a massive heart
attack as he sat in a chair in his front yard. Buriel was
at White Dove Cemetary near Chandler,Oklahoma.
