Howard Apel, 63, who came to Panhandle 49 years ago with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Apel, died at 11:40 p.m. Friday, May 4, at University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston following an illness of five months.

Apel had been an employee of the Gulf Oil Co. for 23 years and was in the transportation department.

Poston Funeral Home brought the body to Panhandle Sunday. Rosary services were held at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home.

Final rites were held at a 10 a.m. Mass Wednesday at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, of which Apel was a member. Officiating was Rev. Arnold Carlson, assisted by Rev. Walter Hammond of Canyon. Music was given by sisters from Sancta Maria Convent of Panhandle.

Burial was in Panhandle Cemetery.

Richard Howard Apel was born Feb. 5, 1893, in Gilliad, Neb., the son of John A. Apel and Ella Howard Apel. He was the next to the last survivors of a family of nine children. The last survivors is Mrs. Elizabeth Lockwood of Colorado, who was here for the services.

Apel was married Jan. 31, 1937, to Minnie K. Kapral of Panhandle at Lubbock. They had one daughter, Mary Howard, a freshman in Panhandle High School.

Pallbearers were Leo Conrad, Frank Beedle, Coy Holman, Bert Bichsel, Ernest Judy and Vern Wisdom.

A brother, John W. Apel of Panhandle, died here a few years ago.
