Ellen Margaret Branson, often known as Ella, was born at Whitlock's mining outpost near the town of Mariposa. She was the daughter of John Geary and Ellen Moran, natives of Ireland who had come to Mariposa County after a number of years in Australia. She married Joseph Branson 29 November 1779. They soon settled on a cattle ranch at Quartzburg/Washington Mine, just north of Hornitos. She lived out her life there (aside from hospitalization in Merced at the very end), much of it in a house the couple moved into in 1897.

Ella was Catholic, but her husband was not, so their grave is some distance from the church in the part of the graveyard devoted to non-Catholics, i.e. the Hornitos City Cemetery portion. They were buried next to their son Alvin Arthur Branson, who died as a young man in an accident in a mine in Bisbee, AZ. Their other five children are buried elsewhere.

Obituary from the Fresno Bee, published Tuesday, 2 July 1946:
