Son of Stephen and Hannah (Kingsbury) Ladd.

On 12 Aug 1862 Otis, a farmer, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Orange, Franklin County, Massachusetts. He was 45 years, 9 months and 30 days old.

Otis and his son, James, served together in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

In 1862 Otis was transferred to the V. R. C. On 19 Aug 1864 Otis ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts by mustering out, per Ford's history.

From the "The descent of George Edgar Ladd, 1864-1940," (1970) -- [He was] "educated in the public schools, at the academy in Berlin, CT, and at the Wesleyan Academy in Wilbraham; during this time he taught school winters; after he was of age he spent three years in teaching in New Jersey and in New York. Since his marriage his occupation has been that of a farmer. He served two years, 1862-1863, in the army, and has been a member of the school committee in Springfield and in Windsor."
