Solon became a mine engineer in Copperopolis after he married. He and his wife had four small sons at the time he was killed in the mine. He rode up and down the shaft so often, that he became forgetful of safety precautions and it cost his life. He rang the bell to start the lift upward and jumped for the rising platform. Solon either slipped off the platform or his jump wasn't long enough because he was only partially on the lift when it passed the rock ceiling cutting Solon in half.

Solon was born, died and is buried in Copperopolis, Calaveras County, California.
