In 1871 when Emma was 5 years old her mother died. Her father, concerned he wasn’t able to raise two young daughters, arranged for John and Catharina Peters to raise Emma and another family to raise Emma’s sister, Anna. In 1876-77 Emma’s new family moved from Clinton County west to Portland, Oregon. Around 1879 they moved again to the White Salmon area in Washington. Here she met Christian Dethman and finally left the Peters family after her marriage to Christian on November 20, 1884.
